Simply put, 1 in 5 people in North America suffer with anxiety and depression severe enough to affect their ability to work and function in their social and family lives (Fava and Mangelli 2001).
This is a huge number and larger than any flu epidemic in taking lives. This statistic alone might help you feel better about your situation. You are far from alone.
This is why so many of us in the mental health sector take extra studies in dealing with anxiety as we grow in our professional work. Anxiety is by far the largest need in society today. There are a number of reasons for that. To name two:
1. Our culture has sped up communications through cell phones and social media. Before there were cell phones (and yes, I’m one of those who remembers) life was considerably slower. Because we couldn’t expect people to react right away to a phone call or text, our stress level wasn’t as high. Expectations of immediate response creates more anxiety.
2. Back in the 1990s, CNN was a rather new sensation. News, video and photos of the Iraq War were available all day every day. Before that, all war and news of devastation were delayed and made somewhat more distant by that delay and lack of instant visuals. A distant war was just that… distant. With the onset of technology, we bring ourselves into some fun and wonderful ways of dealing with the routine aspects of life. However, it also brings new stresses as we are confronted with tragedies almost as they happen and feel far closer to home. Stress anyone?
The last three decades alone have resulted in a major upswing in stressful events and, naturally, anxiety levels. Schools don’t teach us how to function in an anxiety ridden world. Rather, they add to it! Where else can we learn how to become more emotionally intelligent? Right now, the answer is to use mental health professionals. Classes can be a great tool and I will be offering a variety of classes that revolve around the topic of stress reduction. At least we can learn to be more intelligent about our choices to reduce stress in our lives.
In the meantime, try massage, meditation, prayer, or anything that helps you relax. Breathe deeper, relax your body intentionally, relaxing your jaw, dropping your shoulders from under your ears, and allow your glutes to relax with your legs. See? That feels better already!
