One-on-one counseling is a very personal experience and different for every individual depending on your experiences, challenges and goals. The foundation of successful counseling is trust with open, honest communication. Whatever challenges you face, we’ll work together to understand them, ask questions, discover patterns and explore new approaches that allow you to move forward and embrace your life with strength, courage and wisdom.

What to expect when you’re new to Counseling
In the beginning we’ll take time to get paperwork done, arrange payments, set up meeting times, and deal with the other things that tend to wrap us up in details and overshadow why you are here. After that, it’s my job to create a safe space for you to share what’s on your mind and in your heart.
It’s up to you to open your heart and mind so you can share your story about “what’s wrong” and your feelings about what may need to change to help you perceive and deal with the difficulties differently.
What about you are you willing to change? Counseling is all about learning what you have the ability to change, identifying situations that you can and cannot influence, and knowing when to let go of the decision to be upset. These are eternal conflicts in every human being.
Deciding to work with a counselor is a highly personal decision whether or not a friend, relative or medical professional may have suggested you seek counseling. The self-realization that you want to change is an indicator that counseling may be a good choice for you.
It’s important to understand that there is no connection between the desire to participate in counseling and being mentally ill. You are not mentally ill just because life is stressful and situations arise in which you find it difficult to cope or navigate in a way that feels right. It happens to everyone at some point. Some people manage to wade through the noise and confusion on their own, while some of us have the desire to talk it through with a trusted advisor.
People who are considered mentally ill and have officially been diagnosed with a disorder receive counseling from those who specialize in those disorders. Then there are the rest of us who suffer from the side effects of our speedy culture and high expectations. We’re generally not taught how to use our minds to control our distress levels, how to use awareness of our bodies as indicators of dis-ease, and that we truly DO have the ability to change and monitor events in our bodies. We’re a pill oriented society. It’s what we do as first response. It doesn’t have to be that way. You can learn how to reduce your symptoms of stress naturally, without medicine, by stilling your mind, increasing your awareness and listening to the wisdom of your inner voice.
When you call or email, we’ll set up some phone time to talk and decide if you’d like to pursue counseling with me. From there we’ll set up a time when you can meet with me in my office or pursue counseling via video conference through Zoom.
In the meantime, as you think about how you’d like to handle the difficulties or unhappiness you’ve encountered, I invite you to give yourself some quiet time to reflect and contemplate on what you would like your life to look like. Love yourself properly by eating well, drinking plenty of water, and getting some mild exercise. Your mental and emotional state can benefit a great deal by taking care of your body.
